Scouts working towards their Photographer Activity Badge had a visit last night from Wayne Neal, a local professional photographer.

We had already done some work identifying different types and styles of photography, but Wayne came in to give us some tips on how to take a ‘great’ photo.

This helped us get some good ideas for photos, which we had a go at in the village.

Keep an eye out towards the end of this term for when we will present the best of the photos we take over the Summer.

Here’s a few of the practice photos we took last night:

Practice your Morse Code with our telegraph machine!

Last term in Scouts, we built telegraph machines with which to practice our Morse Code. If you fancy having a go, this article will explain what you need to do.

If you need to enlarge a picture, just click on it!

Step 1. Requirements

You will need:

Some tape

Some electricity-conducting foil – a pie tin is ideal

A D-cell battery

Some single-core insulated wire (like telephone cable or speaker cable)

Scissors

A buzzer

Card

One elastic band

Step 2 – Make the battery case

Cut the foil as pictured and wrap the side parts around the tips of one of the pieces of card. This bit of card should be about 15cm long so that it wraps around three sides of the battery, with the foil touching the battery contacts.

Use the elastic band to hold it together.

Step 3 – Attach the battery and buzzer to the base

Use the tape to attach the batter and buzzer to the base. Draw on positive and negative symbols to show which way round the battery needs to go.

Attach the buzzer, again using the tape, and stick down the wires. Attach the black wire to the negative contact (see picture).

Step 4 – Make the Morse Code switch

Wrap the large piece of foil around a long thin piece of stiff card. Stick the other small piece of foil to the base and use the wire to connect it to the negative contact on the battery.

Finally, attach the red wire from the buzzer to the arm.

Step 5 – Give it a go!

Press down the arm until it touches the contact – this should complete the circuit and make the buzzer sound!

Find our what we were up to last week in preparation for our hike.

Last week at Scouts we were getting prepared for our Expedition Challenge Hike by reminding ourselves how to pack rucksacks and use Trangia cookers.

When we hike (16-17 March) we will be carrying everything with us as we go, so it’s really important that we only take with us the very minimum required. With that in mind, here are our…

Top 3 tips for packing your rucksack:

Stuffing a jumper into your sleeping bag case makes a great pillow! Now you don’t need to bring a real one.

Use the side and top pockets of your rucksack to hold things you might need while walking – that way you won’t need to disturb the main part of your rucksack until you arrive at your destination.

Line the main compartment with a thick plastic bag (bin bag will do) to protect your kit from the rain.

You can download the fact sheet that we handed out at the meeting here.

We then got out our trusty Trangia cookers and cooked noodles and hot dogs – just to make sure we had remembered how! We will be taking the Trangias with us on the hike and will be expected to cook our own supper.

Next week is route planning practice where we will practice our skills with maps and compasses. We will also find out our teams for the hike!
